«What makes this sort of breath play intensely erotic is that it is the ultimate form of bondage- an overwhelming removal of the autonomy of the "victim." It is without doubt that public executions of this nature in the 19th century was deeply sexual to the audience, and they could enjoy the sight of the thrashing condemned while pretending to be upstanding citizens witnessing the law.

Perhaps one of the best, or the worst, such events occurred in 1861 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, where the condemned, Paula Angel, a supremely attractive young woman, by any era, was dispatched off of a slowly pulled ox cart. The sheriff had not bound Miss Angel's delicate wrists, as to do so was considered obscene treatment of the weaker sex, and she immediately began pulling herself up, hand over hand to relieve the terminal pressure on her slender throat. The sheriff, on horseback, immediately rode next to her and wrapping one arm around her feminine hips attempted to pull her down to complete the order of the law. Some in the crowd became agitated at the sight of this struggling woman, clinging desperately to life, and the sheriff had to cut her down to prevent a riot. The same procedure was followed early next dawn, with few in attendance, but this time her little wrists were bound in hemp rope, and again she was slowly dropped from the ox cart. It is not known how long her ordeal at the end of rope lasted, but we can imagine she fought like a wildcat.
